From the Heart of a Grieving Father

by Reginald L. Dunham

19 years.

A single son.

So much fun.

A tight relationship.

Dancing, playing together.

The child grows and prospers.

Reaching the teen years, he does what all teens do.

Remi’D and friend go to a party but are dissatisfied and leave.

A bullet flies through the air and pierces multiple organs and takes a life.

Due to leave and defend his country, not going to happen.

What does the father do?

Bemoan, grieve, mourn, remember the good times.

Deep religious convictions and connections lead to finding ways to create a legacy.

Remi’D can’t do it, Dad will.

Many ways to spread good intentions and goodwill throughout communities, even the world.

Turn senseless tragedy to meaningful actions that make sense.

Ways to expend energy and create a better world.

Son would be so proud,

Dad a father forever.

Reading “From the HEART of a GRIEVING FATHER“ offers an intimate glimpse into a relationship that can be known and experienced only by the two involved, in this case father and son. In this instance, we see a man grapple with the grief from losing his only son by turning what he does into the realm of creating a constructive legacy that keeps the son’s memory at the forefront of a special Remi’ D Foundation.  Myriad ways that support others’ goals become the inspiration for the fortunate recipients of scholarships and other opportunities to be generated by the foundation.

The increasing frequency of tragedies in recent years and during 2016 easily can place us in a state of overwhelm.  This author reminds all that we are not powerless. Despite difficult circumstances, it is possible to devote yourself to activities that benefit others.  Creating Remi’ D’s Legacy supports ways to improve local conditions, offers opportunities that otherwise might not exist.

When this book is created “From the Heart,” it offers a perspective that highlights truths embedded in close personal relationships.  Remington and Reginald Dunham – “Just the two of us” – ensure that a Legacy will be created that supports ways to generate better communities.

Your Amazing Itty Bitty™ Family Leadership Book

15 Simple Tips Successful Companies Use That Families Can Implement At Home

by Jacqueline Huynh Schaeffer

Reviewed by Burton Danet, Ph.D.

SCENE:  A family restaurant.

At one of the tables 4 persons are seated.  Food has been brought already, and each eats.  There are 2 adults, a man and a woman and 2 children, a boy and a girl, both pairs sitting side-by-side.  There is notable silence as they eat.  No one is talking.  Each is looking down at their own device, tapping their fingers between bites of food.  This goes on for most of the meal with only an occasional voice heard.

The 4 people are a family: Mother, father and 2 children.  A family!  A family?  What can be said about such a scene?  After all, habits are not specific to one location.  Likely it is not only in restaurants where technology reigns.  A sign of the times, you say?  What has happened to the family unit?  Can technology be put to better and more constructive use?

Jacqueline Huynh Schaeffer thinks so.  If her influence as author of the “Family Leadership Book” makes its mark, there will be at least two major shifts in the passive culture in typical scenes such as that described above.

One shift will be a more constructive way for parents to deal with the inter-relationships among all family members.  As they take hold of leadership skills Ms. Schaeffer has in mind, there likely will be no devices present and instead of quiet, there will be active talk back and forth among all 4 family members.

Another shift will be a more constructive use of the technology available to families today in 2016.  While there are myriad uses one can cite, in her work with clients, the author concentrates on the use of programs such as Skype with Video interaction to foster better family dynamics among adults and children alike.

We remember the adage from “The King and I:”  “…if you become a teacher
by your pupils you'll be taught.”  Is it possible?  Parents can learn from their children? The author offers as one way to be a more compassionate parent is to

“Listen to what your family’s wants and needs are and act accordingly.”

By respecting one’s children, it is possible to convey that what they are expressing, thoughts or feelings, have merit and can be the focus of a discussion.  A core respect across the generations and between the parents themselves or the children themselves goes a long way towards creating a constructive atmosphere that will enhance the family’s functioning as a unit.

So we do not have to give up in despair at the lack of preparation that creates talented and nurturing parents. Available is a way of approaching family functioning and parental guidance simply by adopting what has been well learned in the world of corporate leadership.  Thumb through this 35-page book anywhere and look at the page.  You will find keywords worth thinking AND talking about:

  • Values
  • Goals
  • Communication
  • Compassion
  • Intelligence
  • Listening
  • Alliances
  • Team
  • Example
  • Feedback

What will be your keyword samples?  The beauty of this book is its simple common sense.  It is clear that Ms. Schaeffer has been able to acquire skills that qualify her to guide others into more constructive living.  Her bio states:

“She helps business owners and families develop skills to become successful leaders in order to manifest their vision and leave a legacy.”

Familial leadership skills, then, are worthy of sharp focus and extended attention.  When such skills are developed, the benefits are extensive and can impact one’s development regardless of age.  Intra-familial discussion, when deliberate and instituted by caring parents, sets a tone and offers a live, model behavioral example that implies sincerity, seriousness and awareness of constructive family dynamics and likely elevates the self-esteem of every family member.

Most importantly, Jacqueline Huynh Schaeffer, herself, possesses skills which more than qualify her to offer a method of working with families that courts successful outcomes verified via client feedback and fosters better family functioning.  Can you think of anything more important as we advance technologically?  She will explain to you that technology is here to stay, so finding a way to bring back improved communications among family members despite the prevalence of technology in our lives is a critical focus for all parents and children.

Featuring 31 Inspiring Leaders

by George Fraser & Les Brown

with Dennis Kolb

A Review by Burton Danet, Ph.D., Founder, ABC4All Legacy

Burt!  Wow, I am amazed and impressed!  Your review is so eloquent!  Another amazing thing that I had no say in…was the design of the book…I found out I was the first chapter when I received the final prints!  God works in mysterious ways :)  You did such a great job encapsulating my spirit, I really appreciate the time and effort you spent.  Thank you,  -Dennis

It's for me to "WOW!  Next time we talk we can go over your INSPIRING ability to motivate others.  -Burt

There are 31 examples of this book’s premise, “MISSION UNSTOPPABLE.”  George Fraser and Les Brown lead off with their own inspirational vantage points.  They recognize that inspiration comes in many different presentations and, in fact, they even state that the 31 chapters are “presented” by themselves.  Of note the longest of the Leaders’ chapters is 10 pages, while the shortest is 6 pages.  But most are either 6 or 8 pages long!  Were the authors told to confine their presentations to 6, 8 or at most 10 pages?  Fraser and Brown each lead off occupying 8 pages for a total of 16 pages between the two of them.  What’s presented next?  “Silver Linings” by Dennis Kolb – yet Dennis is featured both on the front cover photograph and as the first of the presentations after Fraser and Brown.

What are we to make of this configuration?  It seems likely that this triumvirate start of “MISSION UNSTOPPABLE“represented a deliberate agreement on the parts of Fraser, Brown and Kolb.  The trio therefore also likely had something in mind when they chose this format.

Will those who read the book be sufficiently stimulated and inspired by all three to read all 31 Leaders’ contributions?  By Dennis’ alone?  Those who read the 31 chapters will be able to answer that question.  Will Dennis Kolb, the featured Leader for some reason, be the one who clinches the impetus to read all the stories for us?  Let’s try and discover possible answers to such questions.

To approach the question about Dennis W.G. Kolb:  A signed copy of the book sent to this reviewer arrived with a message hand written on the front page that included his signature,

“Dennis Kolb

Wondering what the "II" and the “WG” stand for, the query was sent to Dennis indicating that answers were optional.  Providing the response, the author stated,

“I am transparent...I like people to know I was 1 of 2 children, raised by a single parent mother living on welfare. Rags to cancer to health and finally abundance.  The more people I can inspire the better. I can provide you with a bio as well.

“Dennis Wayne Graham 2 is my birth name, I was named after my father...after my parents got a divorce, 10 years later my mother remarried and I was adopted. I kept both my father and my step father’s last name to honor them both. My stepfather's last name is Kolb so my initials are DWGK2 but I use roman numerals II.   My official name is Dennis Wayne Graham Kolb II :).”

Additional insight into the character of DWGKII comes from a biographical description shared at the end of his chapter:

“Dennis Kolb is The Founder of Rise Beyond Dreams, a nonprofit organization serving people facing life-threatening diagnoses and debilitating injuries and their loved ones…helps people support their bodies’ innate ability to heal…A professionally trained motivational speaker…Dennis speaks about his journey from an academic/athlete just days away from high school graduation to a young man not only fighting leukemia, but the disastrous effects of an overdose of chemotherapy.”

Leukemia.  LEUKEMIA!

Leukemia1 is a cancer of blood-forming tissues, including bone marrow, hindering the body's ability to fight infection. Many types exist such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Many patients with slow-growing types of leukemias don't have symptoms. Rapidly growing types of leukemia may cause symptoms that include fatigue, weight loss, frequent infections, and easy bleeding or bruising.

Treatment is highly variable. For slow-growing leukemias, treatment may include monitoring. For aggressive leukemias, treatment includes chemotherapy that's sometimes followed by radiation and stem-cell transplant.

Once confronted with such a diagnosis, one is never the same.  Dennis’ reaction is a good albeit unfortunate example, even before confirmation:  Right away he knew he might have cancer.  As he contemplated his own potential mortality, at first he found himself becoming terrified, especially since there had been cancer in his family.  Here what may be considered a typical fear reaction was replaced with perhaps a deliberate realization that he was “content with the life I’ve lived.”  The switch from fear to contentment permitted an introduction of an inner peace and brought to mind lyrics from Gary Jules’ song, “Mad World3:” “…the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had.”  Above all, we see here an example of one’s ability to control emotional reactions and to direct, i.e., influence, one’s own life and destiny.  In short, rather than being a passive victim, Dennis had the resources to demonstrate for himself that how he responded to such devastating news was a choice that no one would welcome, but once confronted with such information it IS possible to make a decision to be downtrodden or to be able to lift oneself up emotionally.  With even greater insight, Dennis helps others around himself have FUN!  Doing so may well be a boon to his potential recovery!  Certainly he devoted so much deliberate and pervasive intention as he proceeded to deal with what became a multi-year effort!

One can have FUN while coping with and eventually recovering from a potentially life-threatening challenge?  Decide to help others around him to have better attitudes and a more optimistic outlook?  Help OTHERS?

What do we learn from such an example? Getting back to the earlier question of why Dennis is featured on the front cover of this book, we can speculate that his message is pivotal and may well represent a critical and crucial recognition that the human spirit is able to adopt a life-affirming attitude in the face of adversity and even possible end of life.

Dr. Joshua Leibow3 offers a relevant set of “Holistic Affirmations” for people to consider:

With regard to Dennis Kolb, it appears safe to assume and conclude that the remainder of sections in “Mission Unstoppable” might also represent examples of the kernel of truth that his inner strength made possible.

Now a motivational speaker, there is much to be learned from listening to Dennis and learning how important attitude can be in dealing with any adversity brought on by being alive.  One can never know with certainty that it was Dennis’ approach to his grave medical challenge and his adopted posture to help his care givers and loved ones to “giggle” that may explain his recovery.  We really do not need to know.

All concerned can bask in the fact that this young man DID recover, is alive and now offers others severely challenged in life a model of recovery to behold.  Anyone in such a position can benefit from Dennis’ experience.  He truly is on “Mission Unstoppable” and that only question remaining is, does the author’s dynamic lessons in dealing with grave threats to normal living pique readers of this review to be interested enough to go on and read the gems in each and every presentation in this book?

Likely Dennis will be very appreciative if you inform both himself and/or his co-authors of your answer to the question!  Write Dennis at denniskolb (dot) cp (at) gmail (dot) com

Scott snows us that anyone with an open mind can transform the Uber experience into an opportunity with many dimensions.
The guide “allows all travelers, young and senior’s alike, to become informed regarding our great region prior to traveling to L.A. This allows potential travelers an opportunity to plan their trip both from a financial and visitor's prospective.”
When in Los Angeles it is possible to learn and see prime attractions and notable sites if one’s purpose is solely from a tourist’s point of view.
Uber can offer real perks, not just a convenient and even less expensive mode of transportation. The guides allow all travelers to become informed regarding a location prior to traveling there.
Anyone with a smart phone using the Uber app might secure a ride in as little as 4 minutes! Interviews of Uber passengers reveal many dimensions of what can be an extraordinarily rewarding high-tech way of getting around a city and county that stretch 60 miles from the Pacific Ocean to Diamond Bar with Beverly Hills and Hollywood in between.

Billions of dollars are flung at developing new drugs to kill the virus. But, the real answer lies in equipping the existing army of the immune system. Humans are weak and vulnerable. Only 10% to 30% of the people have an immune system that can kill Ebola.

Ebola Lies is more than a book about Ebola.

The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus

by David Quammen

Exposing Lies with Documented Truth and How You Can Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones

by JC Spencer

Educating ourselves about EBOLA is a must.  Here we have author David Quammen issuing a revised and updated version of a previously published chapter in “Spillover.”

This man is not an armchair observer.  He chronicles for us his experiences traveling in the jungles of Gabon, Africa.  The book provides a description that informs the reader of the past, present and future of a clear pandemic potential.

Quammen quotes Karl Johnson who stated “…the virus ‘really goes after the immune system,’ shutting down production of interferon, a class of proteins essential to immune response, so that ‘nothing stops the continued replication of the virus.’”

A logical conclusion?  Take heed – this is a serious and, all too often, deadly concern.  “We live in a complicated planet, rich with organisms of vast diversity, including viruses, all interacting opportunistically, and although there are seven billion of us humans, the place has not been arranged for our convenience or pleasure.”

Author JC Spencer minces no words and confronts us with stark facts and realities of the sorry state of the world and so many of its leaders.  Read as we must but be prepared to WAKE UP!

Spencer offers carefully gathered information as CEO of The Endowment for Medical Research, Inc, a 501(c)(3) non-profit faith-based medical research and education public charity and think tank based in Houston, Texas, which conducts nutritional surveys throughout the United States, Canada, and some foreign countries.  He offers alarming information but helps educate us in great detail with many suggestions as to how we can arm ourselves against such offenders as the potentially deadly Ebola virus.

“…management determines totally different outcomes.  The difference between a disastrous outcome and conquering the enemy if we quickly correct the stumbles, diagnose properly, have sufficient training and supervised well. Fast and thorough tracing of all potential contacts must be ongoing. Monitoring of all of those exposed is vital along with rapid isolation of potentially infectious contacts. Hopefully, we have learned to put better safety protocols in place.”

INTERVIEWS on Missions Radio related to Ebola and additional ways to protect ourselves now and forever into the future.  The steps we can take are regardless of health challenge and relate to Improving Health Maintenance (IHM).
